Ben Goodman: Bodies of Work

Engagement

On a long distance walking trip across the north of England several years ago I found that many of the trails used public pathways that crossed private land. There was a constant opening and closing of gates. I began to see these gates as an inducement to engage with the ever-changing landscape. I have become fascinated with the idea of engagement. It can be physical - a gate latch, meshing of gears, a nut engaging a bolt. Or it can be cerebral - a betrothal, a hostile encounter, having influence or the power to entangle or entrap.
